DANIEL KLERK

Age: 20

A successful Corporate Partners for Change Electrical Trades Pre-vocational Trainee

FB: When did you do the CPC pre-vocational course?
D: I think it was June 2000

FB:What were you doing before this?
D: I was working as a general hand in a Newsagency in Dubbo.

FB: How did you hear about the CPC program?
D: I was referred by a Jobagency in Dubbo

FB:Tell me about the CPC program
D: Well first I had to go for an interview to be accepted and then I had to do a test to see if I had any potential

FB:What areas did they test?
D: It wasn’t all that hard just general maths, spacial things like measurement and to test if I had a mechanical knowledge. Fifteen of us started the 6 week course.

FB: What was the most difficult part of the course?
D: The teacher was good but the workshop program was tough. Not earning any money. But then at the end I got a traineeship and started working for Sydney Water at Bondi, we used to swim almost every lunchtime.

The guys were really great, because I don’t have a car, they would pick me
up from the railway station and take me to jobs all over Sydney doing installations of buildings and stuff. I have to get up early, round 5.15am but the $400, after tax helps, for four days work and one day a week training is ok.

FB: Tell me about your involvement in the Worldskills Competition?
D: The Worldskills Competition is sort of like the Olympics for tradesmen.

I was nominated by EGT and entered the Sydney Regional Gold Medal. The judges observed me in the workshop then they quizzed me on control circuits. I was competing against three and four year apprentices. I did pretty well – I was half a percentage off coming third. But I’ll see how I go in the Nationals in October (23rd and 24th 2002).

FB: What do you think you’ll be doing in 10 years time?
D: Don’t know really.

I would like to be at university doing some electrical studies or maybe I will be
My own boss and manage my own business. We’ll see!
