FREE ELECTRICAL SKILLS TRAINING TO SPARK NEW CAREERS

Western Sydney unemployed people or those looking for a new career should sign-up for a free seven-week pre-vocational training program and change their lives, NSW Minister for Western Sydney, Kim Yeadon, said today.

Mr Yeadon said the highly successful Corporate Partners for Change initiative (CPC), which has placed almost 300 Western Sydney unemployed people into life-changing new careers, was preparing to take on applicants for a new Electrical Trades Program.

“An information day will be held on Month Day at the Electrotech Skills Centre, Rhodes to select participants for the new program, which begins on Month Day,” he said.

“By the time the students graduate from the CPC program, they will have gained the skills to kick-start them on interesting new careers in the electrical industry – one of the fastest growing sectors in NSW.

“These work-ready graduates will be offered the chance to take up Electrical Trades apprenticeships through the Electrogroup Training Company, which supplies skilled workers to organisations including Sydney Water and other major employers.”

CPC is a highly successful initiative of the NSW Government’s Office of Western Sydney. Each program is fully accredited by the Vocational Education Training Advisory Board (VETAB) and funded by the NSW Department of Education and Training as part of the State Government’s Western Sydney Jobs Plan.

Mr Yeadon said CPC was an outstanding partnership between Government, industry and the community, providing pathways to jobs for hundreds of Western Sydney young people in areas including information technology, electronics, retail and assistants in nursing.

“It involves the support of industry and business associations and a commitment from businesses to offer jobs, traineeships or apprenticeships to program graduates,” he said.

23-year-old Daniel Klerk of Parramatta graduated from a CPC Electrical Trades Program in 2000 and is now entering his fourth year as an apprentice electrician at Sydney Water.

After leaving his job as a general hand in a newsagency at Dubbo in the State’s far west, Daniel arrived in Western Sydney and joined CPC.

He is now considering further electrical studies at university or starting his own business.

Those interested in attending the Rhodes information day should contact Frances Beringer at the Office of Western Sydney on 02 8836 2214 or Lee Wright at the Electotech Skills Centre on 02 9736 1777.
